With the advent of TV, many thought radio would die (and it almost did).
But radio today is very much alive and if you like up to the minute news and programs that occupy or challenge the mind, perhaps you need to tune in. Here are some of my favorite AM stations:
KGO (San Franciscoe) 810 KC (comes in stronger after dark). KKAD, l510 KC plays true oldies, ie.BEFORE Elvis and The Whalers. KIXI 880 KC, Seattle's good music station. No shock jocks here although the commercials are plentiful. KBRD, 680 KC, Olympia.(daylight hours only; comes in better in South Tacoma or with good strong atenna system. Plays real records with NO COMMERCIALS (except for semi-hourly plea for kindness to animals.)
KING, 1090 KC, now all country-western but once a week offers Country Classics as in Ernest Tubb, Lefty Frizell, Kitty Wells, and even Hank Snow the Singing Ranger.
(Tacoma's own KLAY 1280 KC broadcasts local sports contests and for that alone should deserve our support.) But KLAY is also the broadcaster of Bob Alek's European Interlude. When you want to hear the sweet sound of beautiful, romantic pop music from 5 nations tune in: Saturday and Sunday from noon to 1 PM. br> Nearly all stations have a web site which you can usually dig out by the call letters. If you would like a log for the entire state, go to :repsonlive.org; or airwaves.com.
And if you loved old-time radio drama and entertainment (Our Miss Brooks, The Shadow, Sam Spade, et al, look go to www.radiospirits.com. They have an extensive catalog of radiobroadcast transcriptions available. They also sponsor a broadcast of same, late Saturday and Sunday nights, skipping around from 710 to 1210 to 880 or some other station that has play time available. A chore to find them but the broadcast, hosted by Stan Freeburg is worth the hunt.
